3,000 fans were entertained by some of SWO finest as the second and final round of the Battle of Barrie Stadiumcross electrified the atmosphere at the Barrie Event Centre. Between word of mouth and the support of NewVR, Rock95, CHAY-FM, Barrie Examiner and the Herald the excitement built all week.
The Pros
Yamaha mounted James Bank returned from national competition to sweep the The Tennyson Technical Services sponsored ATV event but it was second place Bob Delaney whose consistent performance gave him the series crown ahead of Kris Boothby, Blake Hall and Adam Parks.
Machine Racing’s Mike Island, looking much more poised this week, used his 125 ProAm heat to join Chuck Mesley , Mitch Cooke and Kyle Snelgrove in the Rock Solid Construction Dash for Cash. With Mitch Cook nipping at his heels Chuck applied pressure but Mike kept his cool and $250.
The 125 final was a knock down, drag out dog fight. Diablo Honda’s Justin Thompson was relegated to 4th after Chuck Mesley again charged from 4th to 1st but recouped a position at the midpoint as Mitch Cook bobbled and dropped to 5th. Mitch struggled all night as a strong effort was punctuated by mistakes. After leading for most of the race Mike Island was first passed by Mesley and then with only two laps to go, by Thompson.
In 250 qualifying Thompson, Island and Mesley were joined in the Rock Solid Construction dash for cash by Mitch Cook. It looked like a repeat of the previous week as Justin Thompson got the lead but he evetually cracked under pressure from Chuck Mesley just before the checkered. Justin had to watch Chuck pickup $250 .
In the 250 main Chuck grabbed a rare good start (I hope someone got a picture) behind Thompson, passed after 3 laps and ran away. Despite a very poor start Mike Island soldiered on and had closed a race end on Thompson but ran out of laps. Bill Wallin wrestled his CR450F to a 4th while Mitch Cooke salvaged some 5th place money for the night.
As a result Chuck grabbed the #1 plate for the series in both classes and pocketed a big chunk of the $3,000 series purse for his efforts
The Amateurs
Richard Grey (Cobra) took the lead and never gave it up in the 50 class while Dylan Kaelin played the bridesmaid. Skylar Bruce and Damin Waitman were the beneficiaries when Tyler Dymond , the sole KTM in the lead group, slipped from 3rd to 5th in mid race
The 60 class saw another wire to wire win for Danny Armstrong (Kaw). It took until the race midpoint for Bobby Davies (KTM) to fight his way from last to second place after bumping Jesse Pearce, Kurtis Ritchie and Cole Thompson to 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
While Benjamin Lee (Hon) displayed Mesley-like domination of the Supermini while Kurtis Richie (Kaw) , Brendan Train, Danny Armstong and Bobby Davies followed him home in that order.
In the beginners Bobby Biro (Yam) dogged Dan Gysbers for 5 laps before passing to the win while Lee Johnson (Hon) picked off Shane Maltby for 3rd and 4th followed by Paul Wallace.
Scott Maidman made short work of Chris Cooper (6th) to get the lead and eventually the win in the Junior class. Trevor Middleton bumped off Gracjan Litwinski in the final lap for 2nd. Robert Peletier worked his way up from last to 5th behind Rod MacIntosh. Note: Check out event phots by Len Sylvester here
